Surprise displays – done right
How to Plan a Surprise Fireworks Display for Your Wedding
Surprise fireworks displays can add an extraordinary touch to your wedding, creating unforgettable memories for you and your loved ones. But to ensure everything goes off without a hitch, there are some crucial considerations to keep in mind. With over 25 years of experience in the fireworks industry, we’ve seen the joys and pitfalls of surprise displays. Here’s how to do it right.
Communication is Key
Involve Us Early
We’re thrilled to help you create a stunning surprise fireworks display. However, we’re not mind-readers. The earlier you inform us about your plans, the better we can assist you in maintaining the element of surprise. Share details about the recipient and how we should communicate to keep everything under wraps until the big day.
Plan the Reveal
Don’t wait until the last minute to inform your loved one about the fireworks. If we are visible setting up the display during the day, it might spoil the surprise. Most venues don’t have hidden areas for setting up, and we’ll be in uniform for identification by venue staff and security.
By telling your loved one early on the day, you give them the pleasure of anticipation. They’ll look forward to the fireworks, and you’ll still enjoy that special moment of surprise.

Timing is Everything
Keep Your Guests Informed
One of the biggest disappointments is when guests leave before the fireworks begin. We typically finish setting up about an hour before the display, during which time we often see guests departing. For instance, a recent wedding had 300 guests in the afternoon, but only 50 stayed for the evening fireworks.
Avoid this by announcing the fireworks to your guests. Let them know there’s a special display planned. This builds excitement and encourages more people to stay and enjoy the show.
Choose an Ideal Firing Time
Avoid scheduling the fireworks too late in the evening. Guests with children or older relatives might leave early, missing the display. Mid-evening is usually ideal. This timing ensures the maximum number of guests can enjoy the fireworks and adds energy to the evening. Plus, it gives the venue staff time to set up for the next part of your celebration.
Note: In the height of summer, it may not be dark enough for fireworks until later in the evening.
Perfect for Intimate Moments
Surprises for Two
Surprise displays aren’t just for large gatherings. We’ve orchestrated many intimate displays for marriage proposals, such as spelling out “Marry Me?” in fireworks after a football match, or setting up a display in a secluded field for a proposal. These personal moments can be incredibly romantic and memorable.

Avoiding Common Pitfalls
Surprise fireworks displays can be magical when done right. Here’s a quick recap to ensure everything goes smoothly:
- Communicate with us early.
- Inform your loved one on the day to maintain the surprise.
- Announce the fireworks to your guests to keep them from leaving early.
- Schedule the display at an optimal time, usually mid-evening.
By following these guidelines, you’ll ensure your surprise fireworks display is a spectacular success, creating a magical moment that you and your guests will remember forever.
